It has been long since the first gaming console was introduced and through the years, several gaming consoles had been designed to cater the gamer’s interests. Super Famicon, Sega Console, Gameboy, PS1 are just a few of the things which has gotten the interest of gamers in the world. And now, the introduction of one of the latest gadgets in the gaming industry just made quite a great impact in the whole planet.
Sony officially publicized the PS3 at the E3 Conference way back May 16, 2005 through sampling of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and a video footage of Final Fantasy VII to showcase the console’s specifications.
The initial product has the following specifications; two HDMI ports, three Ethernet ports and six USB ports though this was changed a year later to just one HDMI port, one Ethernet port and four USB ports, to reduce costs. It was primarily released in Japan on November 11 and eventually released in North America and Europe on November 17 of 2006.
These are the 20 GB model and the GB 60 model which at that time, costs $499. It includes an HDMI port, Wi-Fi internet, flash card readers and a chrome trim with the brand logo coated in silver and over 81,639 PS3 consoles were sold within that same day it was introduced.
Unfortunately, due to some unforeseen circumstances, the supposed global launch was delayed until March and because of this, Sony advised their clients that they’re eligible for refunds if they had prepaid for it. On the other hand, they can still proceed with their pre-ordering. Though this is not a good start for Sony’s newest product, Sony was still confident about the console’s capability to gain the favor of clients.
In addition to these mishaps, PS3 soon later received unfavorable feedbacks such as lack of interesting games and having a high price tag. As a result, the have unfavorable business position compared to XBOX and Wii which are both known for their economical prices and good quality games.
Also, some even said that it was not compatible and developers find it difficult to program. Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick also mentioned that Nintendo’s XBOX and Wii are doing great in terms of sales rate. However, despite all these negative feedbacks from around the globe, there are still some who believe in the capability of the PS3 and what it CAN do rather than what has happened in the past. The fact remains that PS3′s remarkable quality is something that gamers can look forward to and it’s just a matter of time before great games will get developed for the said console. Even so, a number of people trust PS3 and believe that is a must-have for entertainment.
In the end, Sony still developed newer series of PS3 to backup the falling sales of their first product. That new one is called PS3 slim which gathered more favorable reviews compared to the previous versions and at the same time increasing sales in less than a day since it was initially released. Due to the low-power consuming system plus a reasonable price, clients and gamers find PS3 more efficient now to their gaming needs and the only negative thing about it is its “ugly” appearance, comparing it to the more well-suited appearance of the actual PS3. Generally, repackaging PS3 proves to be a right move for Sony and if all continues to be this way, they will be able to regain what they have lost.
