Many new players start with Warriors as their first class. Indeed early in the game, whilst levelling up it can seem a simple class to play. However, once you start playing in groups and raids, the warrior takes on a whole new role.
There is only really one role for a Warrior in a group. That is “Tank”. Whereas most other character classes have a choice of role, the Warrior is dedicated to this one.
A tank is someone who is prepared to stand toe-to-toe with the biggest baddest foe in the room and take everything he chucks at you. And survive.
Warriors are not really a damage causing class in group play. While you will have some decent damage abilities, your main role is to absorb damage that. Others behind you will have to support you though.
Some of your team mates will be charged with keeping you healed. The main healing focus for priests and other healing classes in your raid will be the tank. You will be absorbing massive amounts of damage, therefore you will need constant healing.
Others in your group will be causing as much damage to the foe as possible. Normally from range. So while you are in the think of it, the ranged DPS (Damage per second) characters will be doing most of the killing for you
If the raid is a large one you will have other roles as well. “Off tanks” whose job it is to take threat off secondary enemies that are too much of a threat and need to be dealt with. Also “CC” classes – crowd control. These players have talents that freeze, stun, morph or otherwise manage to keep groups of the enemy from being able to co-ordinate.
In summary, “tanking” is the main role of a warrior. Take on the biggest enemy. For that you need very high stamina and massive amounts of plate armor. You use “threat” to make sure that the baddest mobs in the room target you.
Playing a Warrior is a tough task end game. The shout in most capital cities on most evenings is “Experienced tank required”, As a Warrior you have one role. Take the brunt of the attack and survive. Your raid will depend on it.
